Dracaena Marginata

Also known as the Dragon Tree, the low maintenance Dracaena Marginata is a houseplant or an office plant with an interesting look to it.

The evergreen plant has long, thin leaves, almost like a type of Palm and these have red edges. It brings an exciting, tropical feel to any room. While the dragon plant likes bright rooms, it won’t like you putting it in direct sunlight.

As the trees grows, the lower leaves die off and you can pull these off, revealing the plant’s thin trunk. They’re fairly slow- growing and can reach up to 6 feet high indoors and are great plants for homes or offices.

While they’re not considered poisonous to humans, they are poisonous to cats and dogs.

Caring for your Dracaena Marginata

• Plant your Dracaena Marginata in an all-purpose potting mix.
  Small stones or gravel can be placed at the bottom of the pot for proper drainage.
• The plant despises the cold and wants a warm environment. It isn’t happy in temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius.
• Water your plant about once a week, allowing the soil to dry before watering again. During the winter they need less water.
• During the hot summer days, spray the leaves with some cool water – preferably lime-free.
• Withering leaves on the Dracaena Marginata might be indicative of not enough light and warmth and too much water.
• You can offer your plant some liquid fertilizer, following the directions on the packaging.
• With good care, your dragon tree will grow in height but also in circumference, and to keep it in control, you can prune the plant from spring to summer. If your Dracaena Marginata has fresh shoots at the top, you can cut off the ones that are roughly 8cm and put them in a planter with good soil and grow a head cutting.
